Built in the 1970s by a Tokyo architect for his own family, this Mount Tamalpais hillside home is a masterclass in mid century Bay Area design. Fifty years later, we were brought in to honor its spirit while updating key spaces for modern living. The original redwood trim, built-ins, and bespoke details were carefully restored or reimagined. We revamped the kitchen and bathrooms for functionality without compromise, and added sleek sliding doors that open onto rebuilt decks; reconnecting the home to its spectacular setting on every level.
We reimagined the kitchen of this classic Elmwood Craftsman home to include a strong connection to the owner’s beloved garden. Floor to ceiling glass, custom cabinetry and a fully tiled wet bath are highlights of this project. Wide plank white oak floors incorporate radiant heat. Details from the owner’s travels and lives include a custom tile backsplash and built in seating constructed of wind felled Acacia from the property.
